The timeless adage is strike while the iron is hot, and few developers are blazing quite like Naughty Dog. Fresh off the resounding success of The Last of Us Part II, the Santa Monica studio will not adopt complacency. Simultaneously, Hollywood’s most prominent superhero actor is also refusing to rest on his laurels. The two worlds collided when Naught Dog announced on Twitter that Tom Holland will play the role of Nathan Drake in the upcoming Uncharted movie. But is the Spider-Man actor the right person for the job? Let’s dive in.

Out of the Frying Pan and Into the Fire

Part Indiana Jones and John McClane, Uncharted protagonist Nathan Drake is a ready-made personality for the big screen. Drake relies on tenacity and wit to overcome harrowing odds, and he does so with the perfect balance of positivity, sarcasm and charm. No matter how dire the circumstance, the Uncharted hero is willing to risk everything to locate his treasure.

Until recently, the Hollywood industry knew Tom Holland for his role as Peter Parker in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. First introduced in 2016, Holland quickly became a fan-favorite for his role as Spider-Man in Captain America: Civil War; and his popularity reached a crescendo in the 2019 film Spider-Man: Far From Home. It was almost inevitable that Naughty Dog would select Holland for the Uncharted movie.

Popularity vs Right Choice

Although Spider-Man and Nathan Drake share many similarities, the two characters could not be further apart concerning certain personality traits. Listed below are several of the most glaring differences:

  • Uncharted script writer Amy Hennig described Nathan Drake as a “Die Hard guy that gets in there and just takes care of the situation;” whereas, in sharp contrast, Peter Parker is often reluctant to intervene.
  • As a result of taking initiative, Nathan Drake oozes confidence and bravado. On the contrary, Peter Parker’s default response is hesitation and doubt.
  • Although Drake maintains a positive perspective, he enjoys light sarcasm, as demonstrated by regular taunting of companions. Peter Parker is frequently concerned for his friends’ well-being; therefore, his approach is more delicate and oversensitive.

While Tom Holland is undoubtedly capable of adopting Nathan Drake’s personality, the question remains as to whether the audience can separate Holland’s work as Spider-Man from his performance as Nathan Drake. If not, the audience could view Holland’s presentation as unnatural and synthetic. The result could influence the Uncharted movie’s box office sales and determine if Naughty Dog makes a sequel. Uncharted releases worldwide on July 16, 2021.
