Sony’s Future of Gaming Event Breaks a Historic Record
None of us possess a crystal ball that can predict the future. However, Sony did its best to defy that law during its Future of Gaming event. As fans across the globe tuned in to witness Sony’s PS5 reveal, a YouTube insider also had a startling revelation. Let’s dive in.
With the cancellation of E3 2020, video game fans were starving for news about Sony’s holiday plans. Sony’s decision to delay its PS5 reveal event only raised fan expectations. On Thursday, Sony treated fans to one of the best video game showcases ever, and fans returned the favor by shattering a historic record.
In a startling revelation, YouTube Statistics Manager Millie announced that Sony’s Future of Gaming event was the most watching gaming live stream of all time on the Google platform. On the surface, this feat might not look impressive; however, fans should recall other historic gaming events. For example, Sony’s 75 minute presentation exceeded each of the previous E3 events, the Game Awards, Tokyo Game Shows, Gamescoms, and more. So what were the numbers?
According to Millie, a total of 7.32 million people watched Sony’s Future of Gaming event live on YouTube. In addition, the top five most-watched trailers included the following:
- Spider-Man: Miles Morales (7.3M)
- Horizon Forbidden West (4.1M)
- Ratchet and Clank: Rift Apart (2.1M)
- Resident Evil 8: Village (1.7M)
- Demon’s Souls Remake (1.7M)
To put Sony’s accomplishment into context, few cable television shows achieve 7.32 million viewers. In fact, Sony’s viewership numbers would have beaten every network television show last week. Such a feat proves that video game fans are passionate and hungry for new content. As the future of television networks and movie theaters appears grim, the gaming industry is poised for continued success.
