A few weeks ago, Square Enix unexpectedly announced the Nier Replicant remake. The 60-second trailer showcased new concept art and an upcoming release for PS4, Xbox, and PC. While fans were excited for the news, the community still knows a handful of details. But on Thursday, Square Enix announced a special live broadcast planned for April 22, 2020.

A Quick Recap

In an interview that coincided with the trailer, Yosuke Saito revealed several details about the Nier remake:

  • Yoko Taro, Yosuke Saito, and Keiichi Okabe are returning to spearhead the project.
  • Saito emphasized that the upcoming game is a remake and not a simple graphical remaster.
  • The remake will include full voice acting.
  • Although not definitive, Saito hinted at a potential new ending.
  • Series composer, Keiichi Okabe, re-recorded each soundtrack and included many new songs in the remake.
  • At the time of the original release, the western audience did not have access to the Replicant version. This is the first time that Nier Replicant will be playable in the west.

The Big Reveal

After the March 29 reveal, Square Enix performed a 10-hour live broadcast on its Twitch and YouTube platforms in commemoration of Nier Replicant’s 10 year anniversary. During the broadcast, Yosuke Saito could not reveal specific details about the remake.

Fast forward two weeks, and Square Enix dropped even more news: a special Nier Replicant remake announcement scheduled for April 22 at 7am EST. The broadcast will feature appearances from Yosuke Saito and Yoko Taro as well as more information about the game. Our hope is that Square Enix provides at least a tentative release window or a trailer that features actual gameplay. For fans who have not witnessed a live Yoko Taro event, you will not want to miss it. Regardless of the information, Yoko Taro is a dynamic and awkward character who always surprises.

Conclusion

Although it is not unusual for companies to announce remakes, the NieR Replicant remake announcement is as unexpected as it is exciting. While Square Enix did not adequately fund the original game, we hope the remake updates not only the graphics but also the gameplay. As more NieR Automata fans become accustomed to the series, perhaps Yoko Taro’s vision for the series will flourish. But we want to know what you think. Did you play NieR Automata?
