Animal Crossing and Xbox: An Unlikely Partnership

The Internet had a collective chuckle over the memes surrounding the launch of Animal Crossing and Doom Eternal on the same day. The unlikely partnership between Isabelle and the Doom Slayer was so implausible that the community did not take the collaboration seriously. But on Saturday, a Nintendo rival revealed an even more unlikely combination: Animal Crossing and Xbox attire.
Better Together
It is well known that Nintendo and Microsoft have a blooming mutual relationship. During the summer of 2018, the two industry titans teamed up to promote crossplay for popular third-party titles, such as Fortnite and Rocket League. Xbox even extended an olive branch by releasing Minecraft on the Nintendo Switch.
A Subtle Message
Fast forward to 2020, and Nintendo continues to be the recipient of Microsoft’s compromise. While the latter continues to share its IP, such as Cuphead and Ori, the former has yet to release a first-party title on a Microsoft platform. On Saturday, Microsoft created a series of branded attire inside one of Nintendo’s most important 2020 releases.
Fans of both Animal Crossing and Microsoft went hysterical. In only 24 hours, players liked the Xbox Tweet over 29,000 times and retweeted over 5,100 times. In addition, Animal Crossing fans began to create their own Microsoft attire within the game. A few examples of our favorites include the following:
As Nintendo fans continue to flood its most popular 2020 game with Xbox attire, our thoughts drift to a hidden message: Is Microsoft subtly asking Nintendo to return the favor by releasing first-party content on an Xbox platform? While the cunning note is likely in jest, we cannot help wondering if Xbox has a deeper message. Perhaps Nintendo’s competition is asking for a favor to be returned? Although unlikely, the industry would lose its collective mind if Nintendo released a first-party title on a Sony or Microsoft platform.
Conclusion
Although the mutual admiration between Nintendo and Microsoft is well documented, Animal Crossing fans never expected Xbox to reveal customized attire within the game. While companies from other industries have expressed interest in Nintendo launches, such as Arby’s creating a level within Super Mario Maker 2, we never expected a direct competitor to embrace a Switch game.
