Resident Evil 3 Remake – New Emergency Dodge

It is no secret that Capcom has a rich library of video game franchises. From Mega Man to Monster Hunter, the company continues to produce quality products. But perhaps no series is more beloved than Resident Evil. Originally released in 1996 for the PlayStation, Resident Evil went on to solidify Capcom as one of the best video game developers in the world. Since then, Capcom has released a myriad of sequels and spin offs. However, with each new release, sales continue to decrease. As a result, Capcom began to alter its strategy in 2017 to “promote the utilization of dormant IP and remakes.” Enter 2020 and the Resident Evil series already has remakes for RE and RE2. On April 3rd Capcom will release the next series remake, which may be the best one yet: Resident Evil 3 Remake.
New Systems
Jill Valentine continues to be a fan-favorite in the Resident Evil series. Known for her good looks and killer instinct, Valentine is well equipped to survive the zombie apocalypse. Now in the Resident Evil 3 Remake, Jill has more tools than ever to combat her foes. In a recent interview with Famitsu, series producer Masachika Kawata talked about the new “emergency dodge” mechanic.

When an enemy attacks, players can press the R1 button in conjunction with the directional thumbstick to perform a “perfect dodge”. Doing so will save Jill from taking damage as well as position the player for a counterattack. The gif above demonstrates how effective this new technique can be.
Kawata also noted that Jill can avoid all enemy attacks with this tactic. The challenge for players is to match the timing of the dodge with enemy attacks. Slower enemies will apparently be harder to dodge while faster and more predictable enemies will be easier for players to learn their patterns. It appears as though this mechanic will be vital for players going forward.
Sales Expectations
Capcom continues to reap the benefits of remaking old games. The Resident Evil 2 remake sold over 6 million copies; therefore, the expectation is that Resident Evil 3 remake will perform similarly. If that is the case, the RE3: Remake could nearly double the sales of the original title from 1999. Time will tell if this next Resident Evil remake outperforms expectations, but all signs point to RE3 being a smash hit.
