As fans eagerly await for the next Nintendo Direct, another major title has a confirmed release date. Earlier in the week, Obsidian Entertainment announced that The Outer Worlds Switch edition will release on March 6, 2020. In a shocking move, Obsidian also revealed that the game will not launch with a physical cartridge. Instead, the game will be available via digital download.

The Details

Obsidian is one of the few third party developers who have gone all in on supporting the Nintendo Switch. Known as the developer of critically acclaimed Fallout: New Vegas, Obsidian has ported the likes of South Park: The Stick of Truth and Pillars of Eternity to the Switch. In addition to The Outer Worlds, Obsidian also plans on releasing Pillars of Eternity II: Deadfire on all consoles.

Which brings us to The Outer Words. The game is an open-world action RPG played, and in a similar vein as the Fable series, player choices impact the overall story and lead to multiple endings. The game is played entirely from a first-person perspective and utilizes a combat, attribute and skill system similar to the Fallout series. While the main campaign clocks in at approximately 20 hours long, the side stories and multiple endings make for a higher replay value than most Switch first-person shooters.

As of early 2020, there is nothing quite like The Outer Worlds on the Nintendo Switch. While the likes of first-person shooters, such as Doom, Wolfeinstein, and Overwatch, are all playable on Nintendo’s portable console, The Outer Worlds offers a unique, story-focused experience that no other game can provide right now.

Although the early 2020 calendar is light on AAA releases for the Switch, The Outer Wilds fills a large gap as Nintendo closes out its fiscal year in March.
