Modern Warfare 2019 Breaks Sales Records
Modern Warfare 2019 had its biggest digital sales opening in Activision history, according to Activision’s official investor relations page. Within a window of just three days, Call of Duty Modern Warfare sold over $600 million and approximately 10 million games. Although this sales information included pre-orders, it is safe to say that the Modern Warfare reboot is well on its way to becoming the best-selling Call of Duty game. Activision had this to say about its flagship series:
“Activision’s Call of Duty®: Modern Warfare® had more than $600 million in sell-through worldwide in its first three days of release. The title has sold more units in its first three days than any other Call of Duty® game sold in its first three days in this console generation and is the top-selling new premium game release of 2019. Modern Warfare also established a new record as the #1 top-selling digital opening in Activision history. With its blockbuster launch, in its first three days of release, Call of Duty: Modern Warfare more than doubled the box office opening of Joker.”
The data that Activision released includes both retail and digital sales as well as the Defender DLC pack. Other key takeaways include the following:
- Top-Selling New Premium Game Release of 2019
- Biggest Selling Digital Opening in Activision History
- Set PS4 Record with Highest Digital Sales in First Three Days
- Sold More Units in First Three Days Than Any Other Call of Duty Three Day Opening In This Console Generation
- Biggest Call of Duty PC Launch Eve
While the success of Modern Warfare is undeniable, time will tell if the game surpasses the sales volume of Call of Duty Modern Warfare 3. Because the sales figures above include DLC purchases, it is safe to assume that Modern Warfare 2019 has sold less than 10 million units. Modern Warfare 3’s release in 2011 generated over 30 million units sold; therefore, the newest installment is roughly one-third of the way to breaking the series’ record.
Will Modern Warfare reach 30 million in sales? While most critics believe this is possible, we here at GamingROI are skeptical. Earlier in the year, Activision revealed that Call of Duty would replace the season pass with a “battle pass”. Because this new approach appears to be more cosmetic in nature, the surge to play Modern Warfare will likely taper off as the 2020 installment release date approaches. GamingROI will continue to monitor Modern Warfare’s sales, but the game still has a ways to go before becoming one of the best all time.
