Struggling to build its online store, the Fortnite developer is trying a new strategy: offering free games. And not just any games. But popular and critically acclaimed games. This week’s offering should have fans excited because for a limited time players can download Civilization VI from the Epic Games Store for absolutely free.
Expanding an Empire
As discussed last week, Steam continues to be the dominant platform for distributing PC games. Unlike Valve, who parleyed its success with the Half Life series into Steam, Epic Games is progressing slowly with the Epic Games Store. Epic Games is quickly discovering that its success with Fortnite is not translating as quickly to success in the online gaming store.
Epic seems to now be employing a new strategy to entice players to try its online platform. By offering a free game each week, Epic is hoping that players will try its store. Last week, Epic offered Grand Theft Auto V for free. This week, the Fortnite creator is offering another popular online game: Civilization VI.
Released in 2016, Civilization VI is the latest installment in the Sid Meier’s turn-based strategy series. Since then, 2K Games has released two major expansions and recently started a subscription service called The New Frontier Pass.
